Navigating the Admission Process for MBBS, BDS, and BAMS after NEET


Every year, thousands of aspiring medical students gear up to take the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), a pivotal exam for securing admission into undergraduate medical courses in India. The journey from NEET results to finally securing a seat in MBBS, BDS, or BAMS programs is both thrilling and complex. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate this process smoothly.


Step 1: NEET Result Declaration

The first milestone in your journey is the declaration of NEET results. The National Testing Agency (NTA) releases the results on its official website. Along with the results, the NTA also releases the qualifying cutoff marks for different categories (General, OBC, SC, ST, etc.).


 Step 2: Counseling Registration

Post results, the next crucial step is the registration for counseling. This is conducted at two levels:


1. All India Quota (AIQ) Counseling:

   - Conducted by the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC).

   - Covers 15% of the total seats in government medical and dental colleges.

   - Open to candidates from across India.

   - Registration and choice filling are done online on the MCC website.


2. State Quota Counseling:

   - Conducted by respective state authorities.

   - Covers 85% of the seats in state government colleges and 100% of the seats in private colleges within the state.

   - State domicile rules apply.

   - Each state has its own counseling portal and procedures.


 Step 3: Document Verification

Once registered, candidates must verify their documents at designated centers. This step ensures the authenticity of the submitted information. Typical documents required include:

   - NEET Admit Card

   - NEET Scorecard

   - Class 10 and 12 Mark Sheets

   - Identity Proof

   - Caste Certificate (if applicable)

   - Domicile Certificate (for state quota)


 Step 4: Choice Filling and Locking

After document verification, candidates must fill in their preferred colleges and courses. This is a critical step as the allocation of seats depends heavily on the order of preferences listed. Once satisfied with their choices, candidates must lock their choices within the given time frame.


 Step 5: Seat Allotment

The MCC and state authorities release seat allotment results based on NEET rank, preferences filled, reservation criteria, and seat availability. Candidates can check their allotment status on the respective counseling websites.


 Step 6: Reporting to Allotted College

Candidates who are allotted a seat must report to the assigned college within the stipulated time. This involves:

   - Paying the admission fee

   - Submitting original documents for verification

   - Completing the admission formalities


Failing to report within the given time frame can lead to forfeiture of the allotted seat.


Step 7: Mop-Up Rounds

If seats remain vacant after the initial rounds of counseling, authorities conduct mop-up rounds. This is an opportunity for candidates who didn’t secure a seat earlier. The process involves fresh registration, choice filling, and seat allotment.


Step 8: Joining the Course

After completing all the formalities, candidates finally join their respective courses. It's essential to attend the orientation sessions and comply with the academic calendar of the institution.


Special Notes for BAMS Admissions

While the process for Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) is similar to MBBS and BDS, there are a few additional points:

   - Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) guidelines are followed.

   - Some states have separate counseling for Ayurveda courses.

   - Specific Ayurvedic universities might have additional rounds of counseling.
